On some sites we have seen Benedict's father listed as Benjamin Pulsipher, born in Ireland in 1614.
The timing is right but, unfortunately, it flies in the face of family lore.

The story 'round the family camp fire is that Benedict was involved with Oliver Cromwell in the overthrow of
King Charles I. Further, prior to Charles II reclaiming the throne in 1661, Benedict (and, presumably others involved in
Charles I's overthrow) fled to the New World in 1659 and changed his name to escape the wrath of Charles II's jailers.

An interesting story, but one fraught with a few difficulties.

Benedict was born in 1635 - Charles I was deposed in 1648 and executed in January of 1649. That means that Benedict was only 13-14 years old. It seems unlikely that he would have been a major player or, even, an armed combatant. What seems more likely, if he was involved at all, was that he might have been a messenger shuttling notes back and forth, or a lookout, or some other low level involvement.

Unless Charles II, upon reclaiming the throne, adopted a scorched earth "kill them all" attitude, it seems unlikely that a 14 year old boy would have drawn much interest. Bigger fish to fry and all that.

After the death of Crowell in 1658, Charles II (who was living in exile in France) was invited to return to England in 1660 and re-claimed the throne in 1661 re-establishing the Monarchy in what is now known as The Restoration. In other words, Benedict would have left England at least a year before Charles was invited to return. Not exactly "one step ahead of his jailers".

The English parliament quickly passed a series of anti-Puritan laws. Benedict is believed to have been a Puritan. However, despite our positive and romantic vision of the Puritans as being the courageous passengers of the Mayflower, in 16th and 17th Century England "puritan" was a pejorative tem synonymous with "extremist". Maybe that's why he left - ????

So we are left with at least 2 possibilities:

If Benjamin Pulsipher really was Benedict's father, then the whole story of Benedict fleeing to the new world
and changing his name falls flat.

If he really did flee here and change his name, then the surname "Pulsipher" was an alias and Benjamin could not possibly be his father as his real name would have been something other than Pulsipher.

In the words of Waiting for Godot - "take the even, take the odd".

An interesting camp fire story. But as far as we are concerned, and in the absence of any documentation to either support or disprove the story, then it is just that - an interesting story of folklore which, like all fables, we neither believe nor disbelieve..

You, of course, are free to view it as you see fit.

Regardless of the true story, finding any ancestors of Benedict (or, if you prefer, Benjamin) has been proven to be virtually impossible. It strikes us as odd, as Benedict has been described as a well educated man of means. We do know that Benedict was also an ancestor of Barbara Bush and, therefore, the younger President George W. Bush (with apologies if you are a Democrat - that makes him our cousin). We can easily believe that President Bush's ancestry was professionally done by, presumably, a team of experts. It is publicly available and we have checked it. But even there, the tree stops with Benedict.

In any event, based on his wife Susanna's ancestry (which is now also our ancestry), it is clear that Benedict married well
And for that we thank him.
