Gerard I
Count of Anvergne
married Rotrude

Ganger Hrolf (Hrolf the Walker) was said to be so large that
no horse could carry him. Hence the nickname
In 895 Hrolf was one of the Viking leaders who attacked Paris.
In 911 Hrolf and his troops were defeated by King Charles
"The Simple" (also our ancestor) at the Battle of Chartres.
Rather than imprisoning Rollo or paying him tribute to leave,
King Charles recognized that Viking attacks would continue.
To that end, in exchange for swearing allegiance to King Charles,
Rolf was given the land now known as Normandy, and title of Duke, with the promise that he would defend it against other Viking attacks.
At that tine he converted to Christianity and
was baptized as Robert (Rollo in Norwegian)
After a time, Vikings to the end, they proceeded to
raid adjacent Frankish lands.
In one of those raids his men kidnapped Poppa,
the daughter of the local Count Berengar II.
She was brought back to Rollo's camp where he married her.
Through that marriage he became the progenitor of the
Dukes of Normandy leading eventually to another of our ancestors, Duke William I, popularly known as William the Conqueror,
and the founder of Modern England.

Herbastus de Crepon I
=====================
Gunnora's siblings are named as sisters Emma and Seinfreda (and) brothers Osbern and Herbast II
In the research papers a few of our ancestors are simply listed as "a niece/nephew of Gunnora".
It is unclear which of her siblings were their parents.
Genealogists generally agree that Herbastus was of Danish ancestry.

We can not overlook that John's brother (our uncle) was
the original "Richard the Lionheart" - King Richard I.
And, yes, this was the same John that, as Prince,
was the antagonist in the Robin Hood fables.
However, as King, he did redeem himself by signing
the Magna Carta at Runnymede, considered to be one of
the foundation stones of modern Democracy.
