In 751 the Merovingian Dynasty was deposed by the Carolingian Dynasty which reached its zenith at the time of Louis the Pious.
During the reign of Louis the Carolingian Empire controlled almost all of Europe with the exception of the Iberian Peninsula
and the lower half of the "boot" of Italy.
When Louis died in 840 his 3 surviving sons fought a civil war for control of the empire.
The dispute was finally settled by the Treaty of Verdun in 843 which divided the Empire into 3 Kingdoms.

* West Francia was given to Charles the Bald and, in time, became France.
* Middle Francia was given to Lothar I and, in time, became Belgium, Luxembourg, Holland (The Netherlands), Switzerland, and Italy.
* East Francia was given to Louis the German and, in time, became Germany and Austria.

Louis the German's bloodline ran out with the death of King Conrad I in 918. At that time the throne passed to Henry I "The Fowler"
who was a great grandson of Louis' sister Gisela and a blood descendent of Louis the Pious.
Charles, Lothar, Gisela and Henry are all in our bloodline. Their lines of descent are carried forward on pages 6, 7 and 8.
