Snae "The Old"
(Snow)
King of Finland

From this point back, in the absence of written records, the ancestors of early Scandanavian leaders are described in larger-than-life terms in various Norse Mythological Sagas.
One of the more famous is Beowulf which, although it includes the names and places of real 6th century people, (including some of our ancestors)
it then goes on to describe mythical battles with Grendel and her unnamed mother (both allegedly to be descendents of the biblical Cain) and an unnamed dragon.
There were also many others describing all sorts of God-like Mythological creatures, including one which purports to lead to a direct descendent of Noah.

For example

The father of Fjolnir Yngvifreysson is listed as Freyr who is described as the "Phallic Fertility God" who bestows "peace and pleasure on mortals".
Freyr is further described as being the son of the Sea God Njoror.
Freyr's wife is named as Gerd and is described as being a "Jotunn", a race of giant sized nature spirits in human form, with super-human strength.

Snae, which translates as "Snow", is described as being the son of Jokul which alternately translates as Frost, Icicle or Glacier.
Jokul, in turn, is described as the son of Kari, the Lord of the Winter who, in turn, is described as the son of a giant named Fornjot .

Like Beowulf, these sagas were passed down orally for centuries before being written down by scholars and monks in the middle ages.
It is probably safe to assume that the monks "Christianized" the stories, hence the references to Cain and Noah - names which pre-Christian Scandanavians could not have known.

According to Danish writer Knud Seeford, Ivar
suffered from Osteogenesis Imperfecta (Brittle
Bone Disease). It is reported that his legs
were "as soft as cartilage" and that he was
unable to walk - hence the nickname.
This infirmity, however, did not prevent him
from handling a Long Bow, commanding his
troops or taking part in battle as Viking
society would have expected a leader to do.
He was reportedly carried into battle
on a shield by his troops
