Although the idea was originally rejected, a plan was proposed for women pilots to ferry combat aircraft
from the factory to a military base to free up male pilots for combat duty.
England had already embraced the concept in January 1940.
The idea eventually percolated to the top with, apparently, assistance from Eleanor Roosevelt
and was finally approved by General Henry H. "Hap" Arnold in 1942.
All the more significant since it was Arnold who rejected the idea in 1940.

Over 25,000 women applied although military records show that only 1074 women became ferry pilots.
Despite their small number they are credited with delivering 12,650 aircraft during a 2 year period.

a brief suggestion
Most smaller hat pins can be multitasked as lapel pins or tie tacks.

This larger pin measures 2 3/4" x 7/8" and is too large for that.

However
being a larger pin it can also be worn, military style,
pinned to a shirt or jacket just above the left top pocket.
Or
Get a pair for the Epaulets of a military style shirt, jacket, or Trench Coat.

It is also the ideal size to use in a Military Shadow Box.
Career veterans have served in a variety of units, each with their own unique unit insignia.
A shadow box is a memorial wall plague that displays the history of their service.
In addition to showing the insignias of all of the units with which they have served,
it also displays any ribbons, awards and decorations that the individual has earned.
