Designed by the American General Christopher Gadsden,
it was also an early flag of the United States Marine Corps.

The image of a rattle snake played a significant role in early American history.
In an essay in 1751, Benjamin Franklin noted that Great britain routinely sent criminals to America.
He remarked that we should thank them by sending rattle snakes to England.

In 1774 Paul Revere added a snake to the masthead of his newspaper the Massachusetts Spy

Before the eagle was selected as out national emblem,
Benjamin Frankling proposed the snake in an essay in 1775:

"I recollected that her eye excelled in brightness, that of any other animal,
and that she has no eye-lids. She may therefore be esteemed an emblem of vigilance.
She never begins an attack, nor, when once engaged, ever surrenders:
She is therefore an emblem of magnanimity and true courage.
As if anxious to prevent all pretensions of quarreling with her,
the weapons with which nature has furnished her, she conceals in the roof of her mouth,
so that, to those who are unacquainted with her, she appears to be a most defenseless animal;
and even when those weapons are shewn and extended for her defense, they appear weak and contemptible;
but their wounds however small, are decisive and fatal:
Conscious of this, she never wounds till she has generously given notice, even to her enemy,
and cautioned him against the danger of treading on her.
Was I wrong, Sir, in thinking this a strong picture of the temper and conduct of America?"

The lamp base is deeply embossed from the back to present a Raised Relief design
giving this lamp base a three dimensional look and feel.

This decorative lamp is all metal (except for the shade, of course)
with a UL approved 6 foot cord and a simple push / push on / off switch.
Or you can plug it into a wall socket controlled by a wall switch and ignore the lamp's switch.

It comes with a white shade with an UNO fitting that rests on the lamp socket
(instead of just clipping on to the bulb)
and a full felt bottom to protect your furniture.

The overall height is 16 inches, including the shade.
Every lamp is brand new with the shade still wrapped in the factory protective plastic.

The lamp has a standard light bulb socket which offers several choices:
Use it as a reading lamp with a standard 60 watt bulb,
or as a night light or accent lamp with a 25 to 40 watt bulb,

use any of the new and cooler fluorescent energy saving bulbs
as long as it has a standard light bulb base.
